Visiting North East made a little noise in the third set of its volleyball match at Rising Sun, mounting a solid comeback and threatening to extend the match, but the host Tigers put them away for a three set sweep in their season opener.
Led by junior outside hitter Bailey Hook, the Tigers rolled through the first two games 25-11 and 25-17. Aided by junior setter Anna Caldwell's 16 assisst for the match, Hook was a force from the front line and behind the 10-foot line. Hook's 16 kills and 18 points led all scorers on both sides and she added three point-saving digs.
In addition to the assists, Caldwell had ten service points, three kills and a dig of her own. Senior Molly Alkinburg had 12 service points of her own and three kills.
North East did make a run in the third match, pulling within one point, but kills from behind the line by Hook extended the lead and finished off the Indians.
In what is supposed to be a rebuilding year with the loss of several talented seniors, Rising Sun opened the season with a win behind the powerful performance from a team comprised of only four seniors. The Tigers move to 1-0 and the Indians drop to 0-1.
