They were just local steeplechasers stretching their legs before season opening point-to-point and steeplechase races, but it was only the beginning of a crazy weekend at Fair Hill. While Three Piece Band and Parade Lap are headed to Middleburg to jump their fences, dozens of horses are invading northwest Cecil County.
Many are there for the Fair Hill Horses Trials. It is a multi-level three-day event with horses as high a 3-Star is skill level. For the uninitiated, three-day eventing is much like the decathlon of equestrian events. Over the course of three or four days, the horse and rider combination will compete in dressage, cross country and stadium jumping. It is a huge event that will scatter horses all over Fair Hill. The most engaging element is the Cross Country, where the Advanced and 3-Star horses will compete across the same ground used for the annual Fair Hill International.
If that isn’t enough horses for you, Sunday brings a renewal of the Fair Hill Point-to-Point. Unlike steeplechase over a fixed circuit, the point-to-point will meander across the backside of Fair Hill, while still finishing at the normal Fair Hill finish line. Enjoy some images of the local jumpers as they work towards their season openers.
