It was just that kind of storybook week for Bohemia Manor freshman tailback and linebacker Bo Matherly. Pressed into service as a starter for the first time, Matherly punctuated what he called a "dream week" by scoring two touchdowns and rushing for 201 yards in the 36-12 win against visiting Fairmount Heights.
Matherly wasn't alone in the scoring as quarterback Colton Countryman ran for 34 yards of his own and cracked the goal line twice. Countryman added a fourth-quarter passing touchdown to Angelo Brusnahan. David Jackson also surpassed the century mark on the ground with 124 yards.
With the exception of mental lapses on two plays that led to two long scores when the game was out of reach, the Bohemia Manor defense kept the Hornets off their game. In the first quarter, Fairmount Height had more yardage in dead-ball penalties than they had from scrimmage. The Hornets were held scoreless at the half, behind 20-0. Nate Price led the defense with six solo tackles and three assists. David Jackson added three solo tackles and three assists.
Matherly looked back on his 200-yard outburst like a media savvy veteran. "I wouldn't have done this without my offensive line, it was a great job by the whole team," he said. But, he did admit starting his first game wasn't easy. "When I first moved up, I was scared, but I fought through it," said Matherly. The win moves Bo Manor to 2-1 on the season. Matherly hopes he can contribute in next week's game at Harford Tech as well, adding, "I think this game will give us a big confidence boost. We have things to work on as a team, but this was a big win for us."
